WHAT DOES VILANCETE MEAN IN PORTUGUESE?

Vilancete

Vilancete was a poetic form common in the Iberian Peninsula, in the time of the Renaissance. The vilancetes could also be adapted for music: many Iberian composers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, such as Juan del Encina or the Portuguese Pedro de Escobar composed musical voices. This type of poem has a motto - the beginning of the poem which, in music, functions as a refrain - followed by one or more stanzas - the turns, verses or glosses - each with 7 verses. The difference between the vilancete and the cantiga depends on the number of verses in the mote: if there are 2 or 3 it is a villain, if there are 4 or more it is a cantiga. Each verse of a vilancete is usually divided into five or seven metric syllables. If the last verse of the mote is repeated at the end of the stanza, the vilancete is said to be perfect. Here is an example of a vilancete, written by Luís de Camões: I hired my Hope; But Love was so madraço, That cut the barac. It was the Hope judged By setença of the Ventura That, because it had me hanging, That it was hanged: Cupid comes with the sword, It cuts to him the bump. Cupid, you were a madrassa.
