Înainte, Philippide, Principii, 138, încercase să-l explice prin gr. ϰῦμα (cf.ciumă) ipoteză acceptată de Bogrea, Dacor., II, 654. – Der.chimiță,s. m. (diavol; bufon, caraghios), care pare a fi un dim. de la cuvîntul anterior (Bogrea și DAR îl explică prin numele unui personaj popular în trecut datorită șotiilor sale; nu este însă posibil să se aplice diavolului numele unui personaj real, și nici nu s-ar explica prin alte mijloace apelativul Chimiță, astfel încît este de presupus că acesta din urmă este o simplă poreclă).
