gog „obiect rotund”, cu
r infix,
cf. gorgoană, gorgoase, provenind din aceeași rădăcină. Sensul de „obiect rotund” este comun tuturor uzurilor sale; cel de al doilea se explică prin faptul că gura urciorului tipic se află deasupra unui cioc care imită sfîrcul sînului (explicație dată de dicționare, de „gît de urcior” nu este exactă). Legătura cu
lat. gurgullus (Hasdeu,
Cuv. din Bătrîni, I, 284) sau
gurgulio (REW 3922; DAR; Pascu, I, 196) pare mai curînd șocantă decît sigură.
Mr. a păstrat, alături de sensul de „cioc de urcior” și pe acela de
bulgăre, obiect rotund, care a trecut în
ngr. γϰουργϰούλια „cartofi” (Höeg 149). –
