ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD MĂLÁI

mălái (măláiuri), s. n.1. (Mold., Trans.) Mei (Panicum miliaceum). – 2. (Trans.) Teren cultivat cu mei. – 3. (Mold., Trans.) Făină de mei. – 4. Făină de porumb, porumb măcinat. – 5. (Mold.) Pîine de mei sau de porumb. – Var. (Mold.) malai (sensul 2, pl.) mălaie. Origine necunoscută. S-a încercat explicarea acestui cuvînt ca moștenire dacă (Hasdeu, Col. lui Traian, 1874, 52); ca urmaș al sl. mlĕti, melją (Cihac, II, 184; Tiktin; Scriban); cu un cuvînt mei lai (Weigand, Jb, XVI, 78; Bogrea, Dacor., IV, 831; REW 5572); sau prin lat. amylum (‹ gr. ἄμυλος), cu suf. -alium (Giuglea, Dacor., III, 599). Nici una din aceste ipoteze nu este satisfăcătoare. Apare evidentă înrudirea cuvîntului cu mămăligă, cu atît mai mult, cu cît ambele lipsesc din dialecte. Dacă-i vorba de o formație internă și expresivă, ne-am putea gîndi la o formă primitivă *mămălaie, cu aceeași reduplicare ca în mămăligă și cu suf. expresiv diferit, cf. hărmălaie, hărăbaie, vîlvătaie etc. Baza expresivă ar fi, într-un astfel de caz, reduplicarea m-m, cu sensul de „aliment”, ca în mamă și mămăligă; și forma actuală, mălai, ar fi reconstituită după pl. mălaie, cu pierderea reduplicării ca în măligă. Der. mălăoi, s. n. (turtă din sămînță de cînepă); mălăoi, s. m. (floarea-soarelui, Helinathus annuus; plantă, Helianthemum alpestre). Din rom. provin rut. maljaj, pol. malaj (Miklosich, Wander., 10; Berneker, II, 10), rus. malai (Vasmer, II, 90), bg. malai (Capidan, Raporturile, 225), mag. malé (Edelspacher 18).
