Absorption is absorption of the sorbate by the entire volume of the sorbent. It is a special case of sorption. In engineering and chemical technology, most often the absorption of gases by liquids occurs. But processes of absorption of gases and liquids by crystalline and amorphous bodies are also known. Often, during the absorption process, not only the increase in the mass of the absorbent material occurs, but also a substantial increase in its volume, as well as a change in its physical characteristics, down to the aggregate state. In practice, absorption is most often used to separate mixtures consisting of substances having different absorption capacities with suitable absorbents.

Абсо́рбция  — поглощение сорбата всем объёмом сорбента. Является частным случаем сорбции. В технике и химической технологии чаще всего встречается абсорбция газов жидкостями. Но известны и процессы абсорбции газов и жидкостей кристаллическими и аморфными телами. Часто в процессе абсорбции происходит не только увеличение массы абсорбирующего материала, но и существенное увеличение его объема, а также изменение его физических характеристик – вплоть до агрегатного состояния. На практике абсорбция чаще всего применяется для разделения смесей, состоящих из веществ, имеющих различную способность к поглощению подходящими абсорбентами.
