Paraffin wax is a colorless, odorless wax type obtained from petroleum. Paraffin wax was first discovered by Carl Reichenbach in 1829 from wood tar; then from the stratified layers; After 1867, it was obtained from oil. In 1947 synthetic paraffin wax was also made. Petroleum is a by-product. In addition, crude oil, paraffin should be removed. In the refining of crude oil, the oil paraffin obtained as a by-product is first melted in hot condition, then cooled, and only the paraffin is allowed to freeze and the oil is removed by filtration through paraffin oil. Modern paraffin mills today also produce paraffin wax based on the above formula. Paraffin waxes made according to the new methods contain about 20% oil. In some cases the amount of fat is reduced to 3%. Further purification further improves color, smell and taste. Sulfate acid and clay are used in the purification process. Paraffin waxes are derived from paraffin-based petroleum species such as Pennsylvania crude oil.

Bugün modern olarak çalışan parafin imalathaneleri de, yukardaki esasa dayanarak parafin mumunu üretir. Yeni metotlara göre yapılan parafin mumları % 20 kadar yağ ihtiva eder. Bazı durumlarda yağ miktarı % 3'e kadar düşürülür. Daha ileri saflaştırma ile renk, koku ve tadı daha iyileştirilir. Saflaştırma işleminde sülfat asidi ve kil kullanılır. Parafin mumları, Pennsylvania ham petrolü gibi parafin esaslı petrol türlerinden elde edilir.
