The Greek, who lived in the borders of the Eastern Roman Empire and had the rights of Roman citizens. Although these people were a group of individuals with various ethnicity, they were later used to express the Greek-speaking people who lived in Muslim countries outside Greece, because of their lives in the places where they adopted Greek by leaving Latin, where they were speaking, and where the majority of them were Muslims. In the history of the Eastern Roman Empire until the 6th century, which speaks Latin and speaks Greek after 6th century, Muslim countries called Greek people. Today, most of the Greeks live in Cyprus. The Greek Cypriots, who settled in Anatolia with very old histories, almost completely separated from the Republic of Turkey with the Turkey-Greece Population Exchange after 1923 and the last events of September 6-7. The Greek word is a member of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is close to the Greek Cypriots, with no religious / sectarian meaning. Tarihte Doğu Roma İmparatorluğu'nu oluşturan 6. yüzyıl'a kadar Latince konuşan ve 6. yüzyıl'dan sonra Yunanca konuşan kimselere Müslüman ülkelerde Rum denirdi. Günümüzde Rumların büyük kısmı Kıbrıs'da yaşamaktadır. Anadolu'ya yerleşmeleri çok eski tarihlere dayanan Rumlar, 1923 yılından sonra Türkiye-Yunanistan Nüfus Mübadelesi ve en son olarak 6-7 Eylül Olayları ile Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nden neredeyse tamamen ayrıldılar. Rum kelimesi herhangi bir dini/mezhepsel anlam taşımamakla birlikte Rumların tamamına yakını Doğu Ortodoks Kilisesi mensubudur. Bu tanımdaki Rum sözcüğü Helen kökenli Rumları kapsamaktadır.
