En ecología, especialmente en limnología, la distrofia se refiere al estado hídrico de las aguas pobres, pobres en nutrientes, ricas en ácidos y calcáreas, que se designan como aguas distróficas. Las aguas de este tipo son doradas por la alta proporción de sustancias de humus disueltas y también se denominan lagos de agua parda. Esta categoría incluye principalmente aguas pantanosas y cuerpos de agua en bosques resistentes con una alta proporción de árboles, las sustancias de humus provienen del medio ambiente moor de las aguas. En los lagos distróficos hay muy poco fitoplancton, pero tienen una rica ocurrencia de zooplancton; Debido al bajo nivel de oxígeno, la fauna del suelo también es muy pobre en especies. La forma sedimentaria típica de estas aguas es el Dy o lodo de turba.

Gewässer dieses Typs sind durch den hohen Anteil an gelösten Humussubstanzen braun gefärbt und werden entsprechend auch als Braunwasserseen bezeichnet. In diese Kategorie fallen vor allem Moorgewässer und Gewässer in Bruchwäldern mit einem hohen Laubwurfanteil, die Humussubstanzen stammen aus der moorreichen Umgebung der Gewässer. In dystrophen Seen ist nur sehr wenig Phytoplankton zu finden, allerdings verfügen sie über ein reiches Vorkommen von Zooplankton; aufgrund des sauerstoffarmen Tiefenwassers ist die Bodenfauna zudem sehr artenarm. Die typische Sedimentform dieser Gewässer ist der Dy bzw. Torfschlamm.
