El término Agustinos, llamado así por San Agustín de Hippo, se aplica a dos tipos distintos y no relacionados de órdenes religiosas católicas: Varios mendicantes Orden de los frailes, que vivieron una vida religiosa mixta de contemplación y ministerio apostólico y siguen la Regla de San Agustín, un Breve documento que proporciona las pautas para vivir en una comunidad religiosa. El más grande y más familiar, originalmente conocido como los ermitaños de San Agustín y también como los frailes de Austin, ahora se conoce simplemente como la Orden de San Agustín. Otras dos órdenes, los agustinos recoletos y los agustinos descalzos, formaban parte del orden agustiniano bajo un solo prior general. Los frailes recoletos, fundados en 1588 como un movimiento de reforma de los frailes agustinos en España, se hicieron autónomos en 1612 con su primer Prior General, Enrique de la Sagrada. Los frailes descalzos se convirtieron en una congregación religiosa independiente con su propio prior general en 1592, y fueron levantados a la condición de una orden mendicante independiente en 1610.
