Baldaquín
Un baldaquín, o baldaquín, es un dosel de estado sobre un altar o trono. Tiene sus comienzos como un pabellón de tela, pero en otros casos es un rasgo arquitectónico robusto y permanente, particularmente sobre altares altos en catedrales, donde tal estructura se llama más correctamente ciborium cuando es suficientemente arquitectónico en forma. Un paño de honor es un paño más simple que cuelga verticalmente detrás del trono, que se puede combinar con un dosel. "Baldachin" era originalmente un tipo lujoso de paño de Bagdad, cuyo nombre la palabra se deriva, en inglés como "baudekin" y otras ortografías. Matthew Paris registra que Enrique III de Inglaterra llevaba una túnica "de preciosísimo baldekino" en una ceremonia en la Abadía de Westminster en 1247. La palabra para el paño se convirtió en la palabra para los pabellones ceremoniales hechos de la tela. En la Edad Media, un toldo hierático de estado o tela de estado fue colgado sobre el asiento de un personaje de suficiente estatura, como símbolo de autoridad.
