Ballena
La ballena franca es una especie de la familia de la ballena franca Balaenidae, en el suborden Mysticeti y el género Balaena. Una ballena gruesa de color oscuro sin aleta dorsal, que puede llegar a 20 m de longitud. Esta especie de cuerpo grueso puede pesar entre 75 y 100 toneladas, sólo después de la ballena azul, aunque la longitud máxima de la cabeza de ballena es menor que otras ballenas. Vive completamente en aguas fértiles del Ártico y subártico, a diferencia de otras ballenas que migran para alimentarse o reproducirse a aguas de baja latitud. También se conocía como la ballena franca de Groenlandia o la ballena Ártica. Los balleneros americanos lo llamaron el steeple-top, ballena polar, o Rusia o ballena rusa. La cabeza de proa tiene la boca más grande de cualquier animal. La cabeza de ballena era un objetivo temprano de la caza de ballenas. Su población fue severamente reducida antes de una moratoria de 1966. La población se estima en más de 24.900 en todo el mundo, por debajo de un estimado de 50.000 antes de la caza de ballenas.
