Cacomistle
El cacomista, Bassariscus sumichrasti, es un miembro nocturno, arbóreo y omnívoro de la familia carnívora Procyonidae. Sus hábitats preferidos son bosques húmedos, tropicales, de hoja perenne y bosques de montaña, aunque estacionalmente se aventurará en bosques caducifolios más secos. En ninguna parte de su rango es común B. sumichrasti. Esto es especialmente cierto en Costa Rica, donde habita sólo un área muy pequeña. Es completamente dependiente del hábitat forestal, haciéndolo particularmente susceptible a la deforestación. En IPA, su nombre se pronuncia "cacomistle", o "cacomixle". El término cacomistle es del idioma náhuatl y significa "medio gato" o "medio león de montaña"; A veces también se utiliza para referirse a la cola de anillo, Bassariscus astutus, una especie similar que habita el norte árido y el sudoeste americano.
