Según el artículo de Bratton y Kacmar, El lado oscuro de la gestión de impresiones, el carriérismo extremo es la propensión a perseguir el progreso profesional, el poder y el prestigio a través de cualquier actividad positiva o negativa basada en el desempeño que se considere necesaria. Estas actividades basadas en el "no rendimiento" son actividades en las que un empleado puede manipular fácilmente a las personas a las que intenta impresionar. El careerismo extremo ha llegado a ser cada vez más común en el mundo de negocio y de organización en los años 90 y los años 2000. En Estados Unidos, desde 1994 se han añadido diecisiete días de trabajo adicionales al calendario.
