El catastrophism es la teoría que la tierra ha sido afectada en el pasado por los acontecimientos repentinos, de corta duración, violentos, posiblemente en todo el mundo en alcance. Esto contrastaba con el uniformismo, en el que los lentos cambios incrementales, como la erosión, creaban todas las características geológicas de la Tierra.
