Chartismo
El cartismo era un movimiento de la clase obrera para la reforma política en Gran Bretaña que existió de 1838 a 1850 y que tomó su nombre de la carta del pueblo de 1838. Era un movimiento de protesta nacional, con fortalezas particulares del soporte en el norte de Inglaterra, el este Midlands, las cerámicas, el país negro y Gales del sur. El apoyo al movimiento fue el más alto en 1839, 1842 y 1848, cuando se presentaron peticiones firmadas por millones de trabajadores en la Cámara de los Comunes. La estrategia utilizada fue utilizar la escala de apoyo a estas peticiones y las reuniones de masas que lo acompañaron demostraron ejercer presión sobre los políticos para que concedieran el sufragio de la hombría. El cartismo se basó así en métodos constitucionales para asegurar sus objetivos, aunque hubo algunos que se involucraron en actividades insurreccionales, especialmente en el sur de Gales y Yorkshire. La Carta Popular exigía seis reformas para hacer más democrático el sistema político: ▪ Un voto para todos los hombres de veintiún años de edad, de mente sana y sin castigo por un crimen. ▪ La boleta secreta - Para proteger al elector en el ejercicio de su voto.
