Gallo de la roca
El gallo-de-la-roca, que componen el género Rupicola, son los pájaros cotingid suramericanos. El gallo andino de la roca es el ave nacional del Perú. Se encuentran en las selvas tropicales y subtropicales cerca de áreas rocosas, donde construyen sus nidos. Los machos son pájaros magníficos, no sólo debido a sus colores anaranjados o rojos brillantes, sino también debido a sus crestas prominentes en forma de abanico. Como algunos otros cotingids, tienen un comportamiento complejo del cortejo, realizando exhibiciones lek impresionantes. Las hembras son en general marrones con toques de los colores brillantes de los machos. Las hembras construyen nidos en los acantilados rocosos o grandes cantos rodados, y levantan a los jóvenes por su cuenta. Por lo general ponen dos huevos. Excepto durante la época de apareamiento, estas aves son animales cuidadosos y difíciles de ver en el dosel de la selva tropical. Se alimentan principalmente de frutas y bayas y pueden ser importantes agentes de dispersión para las semillas de la selva tropical.
