Una proposición contingente no es ni necesariamente verdadera ni necesariamente falsa. Las proposiciones que son contingentes pueden ser así porque contienen conectivos lógicos que, junto con el valor de verdad de cualquiera de sus partes atómicas, determinan el valor de verdad de la proposición. Esto quiere decir que el valor de verdad de la proposición es contingente a los valores de verdad de las oraciones que lo componen. Las proposiciones contingentes dependen de los hechos, mientras que las proposiciones analíticas son verdaderas sin tener en cuenta los hechos de los que hablan. Junto con las proposiciones contingentes, hay por lo menos otras tres clases de proposiciones, algunas de las cuales se solapan: ▪ Las proposiciones tautológicas, que deben ser verdaderas, sin importar cuáles sean o puedan ser las circunstancias. ▪ Contradicciones que necesariamente deben ser falsas, sin importar cuáles sean las circunstancias o podrían ser. ▪ Posibles proposiciones, que son verdaderas o podrían haber sido ciertas dadas ciertas circunstancias.

In philosophy and logic, contingency is the status of propositions that are neither true under every possible valuation nor false under every possible valuation. A contingent proposition is neither necessarily true nor necessarily false. Propositions that are contingent may be so because they contain logical connectives which, along with the truth value of any of its atomic parts, determine the truth value of the proposition. This is to say that the truth value of the proposition is contingent upon the truth values of the sentences which comprise it. Contingent propositions depend on the facts, whereas analytic propositions are true without regard to any facts about which they speak. Along with contingent propositions, there are at least three other classes of propositions, some of which overlap: ▪ Tautological propositions, which must be true, no matter what the circumstances are or could be. ▪ Contradictions which must necessarily be untrue, no matter what the circumstances are or could be. ▪ Possible propositions, which are true or could have been true given certain circumstances.
