Las Cruzadas fueron campañas militares sancionadas por la Iglesia Católica Romana Latina durante la Alta Edad Media y la Baja Edad Media. En 1095 Papa Urbano II proclamó la Primera Cruzada con el objetivo declarado de restaurar el acceso cristiano a lugares sagrados en Jerusalén y sus alrededores. Muchos historiadores y algunos de los implicados en la época, como San Bernardo de Clairvaux, dan igual precedencia a otras campañas militares sancionadas por el Papa por diversas razones religiosas, económicas y políticas, como la Cruzada albigense, la Cruzada Aragonesa, La Reconquista y las Cruzadas del Norte. Después de la Primera Cruzada hubo una lucha intermitente de 200 años por el control de la Tierra Santa, con seis más grandes cruzadas y numerosas menores. En 1291, el conflicto terminó en fracaso con la caída de la última fortaleza cristiana en Tierra Santa en Acre, después de lo cual Europa católica romana no montó ninguna respuesta más coherente en el este.
