Descifrador
Un decodificador es un dispositivo que hace el funcionamiento inverso de un codificador, deshaciendo la codificación para que la información original pueda ser recuperada. El mismo método utilizado para codificar se suele invertir con el fin de decodificar. Es un circuito combinacional que convierte la información binaria de n líneas de entrada a un máximo de 2n líneas de salida únicas. Un decodificador de un bit de 2 a 4 líneas En la electrónica digital, un decodificador puede tomar la forma de un circuito lógico de entradas múltiples y de salida múltiple que convierte entradas codificadas en salidas codificadas, donde los códigos de entrada y salida son diferentes. p.ej. N-a-2n, decodificadores decimales de código binario. Las entradas de habilitación deben estar activadas para que el decodificador funcione, de lo contrario sus salidas asumen una sola palabra de código de salida "deshabilitada". La decodificación es necesaria en aplicaciones tales como multiplexación de datos, visualización de 7 segmentos y decodificación de direcciones de memoria. El circuito decodificador de ejemplo sería una puerta AND porque la salida de una puerta AND es "High" sólo cuando todas sus entradas son "High". Esta salida se denomina "salida alta activa". Si en lugar de la puerta Y, la puerta NAND está conectada, la salida será "Baja" sólo cuando todas sus entradas sean "Alto". Dicha salida se denomina "salida baja activa".
