Elis / ɛlɨs /, o Eleia /ɛlaɪ.ə/ es un antiguo distrito que corresponde con la moderna unidad regional de Elis. Es en Grecia meridional en la península de Peloponnesos, limitada en el norte por Acaya, al este por Arcadia, al sur por Messenia, y al oeste por el mar Jónico. A lo largo de los períodos arcaico y clásico, la polis de Elis controlaba gran parte de la región de Elis, muy probablemente a través de tratados desiguales con otras ciudades, que habrían tenido un estado perioico. El primer festival olímpico fue organizado en la tierra de Elean, Olympia, Grecia por las autoridades de Elis en el 8vo siglo AC, con la tradición que data de los primeros juegos en 776 AC.
