Fructificación
La fructificación es la parte generativa de la planta. A veces se aplica más ampliamente a las partes generativas de gimnospermas, helechos, colas de caballo y licófitas, aunque no producen ni fruta ni flor. Desde los trabajos de Andrea Caesalpino los caracteres de la fructificación han sido ampliamente utilizados como base para la clasificación científica de las plantas. Carolus Linnaeus elevó la descripción de las partes de la fructificación a un nivel de precisión sin precedentes. Insistió en que los géneros y los grupos superiores de plantas deben ser caracterizados en términos de la fructificación sola sin usar partes vegetativas. En ese momento se creía que todas las plantas tienen flores y frutos. No fue hasta el siglo XIX que la importante diferencia entre semillas y esporas fue reconocida y el uso de términos flor y fruta se restringió a las plantas con flores. Posteriormente, los taxonomistas de las plantas utilizaron un enfoque más equilibrado y reintrodujeron el uso de las partes vegetativas de la planta como base para los personajes a diferentes niveles de jerarquía taxonómica.
