Gasificación
La gasificación es un proceso que convierte materiales carbonosos orgánicos o basados en combustibles fósiles en monóxido de carbono, hidrógeno y dióxido de carbono. Esto se consigue haciendo reaccionar el material a altas temperaturas, sin combustión, con una cantidad controlada de oxígeno y / o vapor. La mezcla de gas resultante se denomina gas de síntesis o de producción y es en sí misma un combustible. Se considera que la energía derivada de la gasificación y la combustión del gas resultante es una fuente de energía renovable si los compuestos gaseificados se obtienen de la biomasa. La ventaja de la gasificación es que el uso del gas de síntesis es potencialmente más eficiente que la combustión directa del combustible original porque puede ser quemado a temperaturas más altas o incluso en pilas de combustible, de modo que el límite superior termodinámico a la eficiencia definida por la regla de Carnot sea más alto o no aplica. El gas de síntesis puede ser quemado directamente en motores de gas, usado para producir metanol e hidrógeno, o convertido a través del proceso de Fischer-Tropsch en combustible sintético. La gasificación también puede comenzar con un material que de otro modo se hubiera eliminado, tal como residuos biodegradables.
