El mayor scaup, sólo scaup en Europa, o coloquially "bluebill" en América del Norte para su cuenta azul brillante, es un pato de salto de tamaño mediano, aunque es más grande que el scaup menor estrechamente relacionados. Es una especie circumpolar, lo que significa que su rango circunda uno de los polos de la Tierra. Pasa los meses de verano cría en Alaska, el norte de Canadá, Siberia, y los extremos más septentrionales de Europa. Durante el invierno, migra al sur por las costas de América del Norte, Europa y Japón. El pene mayor de Drake es más grande y tiene cabezas más redondeadas que las hembras; Tienen una cuenta azul brillante y ojos amarillos. Tienen cabezas oscuras con un tinte verde brillante, blancos debajo y las alas con blanco en las puntas. Las hembras son en su mayoría marrones, con bandas blancas ubicadas en sus puntas de las alas.
