El hellbender, también conocido como la salamandra hellbender, es una especie de salamandra gigante endémica al este de Norteamérica. Un miembro de la familia de Cryptobranchidae, los hellbenders son los únicos miembros del género de Cryptobranchus, y son ensamblados solamente por otro género de salamanders en el nivel de la familia. Estas salamandras son mucho más grandes que otras en su rango endémico, emplean un medio inusual de respiración y llenan un nicho particular -tanto como depredador como como presa- en sus ecosistemas, que ellos o sus antepasados han ocupado por alrededor de 65 Millones de años.
