Isostasy
Isostasy es un término utilizado en la geología para referirse al estado de equilibrio gravitacional entre la litosfera de la tierra y astenosfera de tal manera que las placas tectónicas "flotan" a una elevación que depende de su espesor y densidad. Este concepto se invoca para explicar cómo pueden existir diferentes alturas topográficas en la superficie de la Tierra. Cuando una determinada área de la litosfera alcanza el estado de isostasia, se dice que está en equilibrio isostático. La isostasia no es un proceso que altera el equilibrio, sino más bien uno que lo restaura. Se acepta generalmente que la Tierra es un sistema dinámico que responde a las cargas de muchas maneras diferentes. Sin embargo, isostasy proporciona una "visión" importante de los procesos que están sucediendo en las áreas que están experimentando el movimiento vertical. Ciertas áreas no están en equilibrio isostático, lo que ha obligado a los investigadores a identificar otras razones para explicar sus alturas topográficas. En el ejemplo más simple, isostasia es el principio de flotabilidad en el que un objeto sumergido en un líquido es empujado con una fuerza igual al peso del líquido desplazado.

La litosfera flota sobre la astenosfera semifluida a continuación. Si una sección de la litosfera está cargada, como por el hielo, lentamente disminuirá a una nueva posición de equilibrio; si una sección de la litosfera se reduce en masa, como por erosión, lentamente se elevará a una nueva posición de equilibrio.
