Ascender (escalada)
Un ascender es un dispositivo mecánico usado para ascender sobre una cuerda. Un tal dispositivo es un Jumar, nombrado después de la fábrica suiza que desarrolló la primera herramienta para la venta en 1958. El nombre del dispositivo también conduce al término Jumaring para el proceso de usar tal dispositivo. Otros términos para este proceso incluyen ascensión, prusiking y jugging. Los ascenders ofrecen una funcionalidad similar a los nudos de fricción, pero son más rápidos y fáciles de usar, aunque con consecuencias en la seguridad. Un ascensor emplea una leva que permite que el dispositivo se deslice libremente en una dirección y proporcione un agarre firme sobre la cuerda cuando se tira en la dirección opuesta. Para evitar que un ascensor accidentalmente salga de la cuerda, se despliega un mecanismo de bloqueo o disparador. El ascensor se une primero al arnés del escalador por un pedazo de tela o eslinga, y luego se acorta en la cuerda y se bloquea. Para escalar una cuerda fija, por ejemplo, para anclar nieve sobre una pendiente empinada, se utiliza sólo un ascensor, manteniendo la otra mano libre para sostener un piolet. Jumaring, también conocido como jugging, es donde el segundo escalador utiliza ascensores para subir la cuerda en lugar de escalar directamente sobre la roca.
