Los objetos con una mayor exposición a cada elemento experimentarán más desviación de margen y movimiento general a través del agua que aquellos con menos exposición. Un navegante o un piloto en un buque debe ajustar el rumbo ordenado para compensar la desviación de margen y el conjunto y la deriva más importantes, un término que abarca toda la deriva que incluye el error de dirección del buque.
