Los marranos eran originalmente judíos que vivían en la Península Ibérica y que se convirtieron o se vieron obligados a convertirse al cristianismo, algunos de los cuales pueden haber seguido practicando el judaísmo en secreto. El término entró en uso posterior en 1492 con el Decreto castellano de la Alhambra, invirtiendo protecciones originalmente en el Tratado de Granada. Los conversos eran también conocidos como cristianos nuevos o cristãos-nuevos, que significan los nuevos cristianos; Conversos; O anusim. Este último es el término preferido entre sus descendientes y algunos eruditos: Marrano tenía y aún hoy tiene un sentido peyorativo en español.
