Meandro
Un meandro, en general, es una curva en un curso de agua o un río sinuoso. Un meandro se forma al mover el agua en una corriente que erosiona los bancos exteriores y ensancha su valle, y la parte interior del río tiene menos energía y deposita sedimentos. Una corriente de cualquier volumen puede asumir un curso sinuoso, erosionando alternativamente los sedimentos desde el exterior de una curva y depositándolos en el interior. El resultado es un patrón que serpentea mientras que la corriente serpentea hacia adelante y hacia atrás a través de su eje del down-valle. Cuando un meandro se corta de la corriente principal, se forma un lago oxbow. Con el tiempo los meandros migran río abajo, a veces en tan poco tiempo como para crear problemas de ingeniería civil para los municipios locales que intentan mantener carreteras y puentes estables. Todavía no existe una coherencia o uniformización completa de la terminología científica utilizada para describir los cursos de agua. Existe una variedad de símbolos y esquemas. Los parámetros basados en fórmulas matemáticas o datos numéricos también varían, dependiendo de la base de datos utilizada por el teórico.
