El metilfenidato es una fenetilamina sustituida y un fármaco psicoestimulante usado para el tratamiento del trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad, síndrome de taquicardia postural ortostática y narcolepsia. El metilfenidato se ha estudiado e investigado durante más de 50 años y tiene un registro de eficacia y seguridad muy bueno para el tratamiento del TDAH. La patente original era propiedad de CIBA, ahora Novartis Corporation. Fue licenciado por la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de los Estados Unidos en 1955 para tratar lo que entonces se conocía como hiperactividad. Prescrito a los pacientes a partir de 1960, la droga se prescribió fuertemente en la década de 1990, cuando el diagnóstico de TDAH en sí se hizo más ampliamente aceptado. Se cree que el ADHD y otras afecciones similares están vinculadas a la sub-realización de las funciones de dopamina y norepinefrina en el cerebro, principalmente en la corteza prefrontal, responsable de la función autorreguladora y la función ejecutiva. El mecanismo de acción del metilfenidato implica la inhibición de la recaptación de catecolaminas, principalmente como inhibidor de la recaptación de dopamina.
