Un nómada, es un miembro de una comunidad de personas que viven de un lugar a otro. Entre las diversas formas en que los nómadas se relacionan con su entorno, se puede distinguir el cazador-recolector, el nómada pastoral que posee ganado o el nómada "moderno" peripatético. A partir de 1995, se estima que hay entre 30 y 40 millones de nómadas en el mundo. La caza y la recolección nómadas, siguiendo las plantas silvestres disponibles estacionalmente y el caza, es con mucho el más antiguo método de subsistencia humana. Los pastores levantan manadas, los conducen o se mueven con ellos, en patrones que normalmente evitan el agotamiento de los pastos más allá de su capacidad de recuperación. El nomadismo es también un estilo de vida adaptado a las regiones infértiles como la estepa, la tundra o el hielo y la arena, donde la movilidad es la estrategia más eficiente para explotar recursos escasos. A veces también se les llama "nómadas" son las diversas poblaciones itinerantes que se desplazan en áreas densamente pobladas que no viven de recursos naturales, sino ofreciendo servicios a la población residente. Estos grupos son conocidos como "nómadas peripatéticos".
