Nubia
Nubia es una región a lo largo del río Nilo, que se encuentra en el norte de Sudán y el sur de Egipto. Hubo una serie de grandes reinos nubios a lo largo de la Era Postclásica, la última de las cuales se derrumbó en 1504, cuando Nubia se dividió entre Egipto y el sultanato de Sennar, resultando en la arabización de gran parte de la población núbia. Nubia se unió otra vez dentro de Egipto otomano en el siglo XIX, y dentro de Sudán Anglo-egipcio de 1899 a 1956. El nombre Nubia se deriva del de los Noba, nómadas que asentaron la zona en el siglo IV, con el colapso de la Reino de Meroë. El Noba hablaba una lengua nilo-sahariana, ancestral al viejo Nubian. El antiguo Nubian fue utilizado principalmente en textos religiosos que datan de los siglos VIII y XV. Antes del siglo IV, ya lo largo de la antigüedad clásica, Nubia era conocida como Kush, o, en griego clásico, incluida bajo el nombre de Etiopía. Históricamente, la gente de Nubia habló por lo menos de dos variedades del grupo de la lengua de Nubian, una subfamilia que incluye Nobiin, Kenuzi-Dongola, Midob y varias variedades relacionadas en la parte norte de las montañas de Nuba en Kordofan del sur.
