Onomasiology (del griego: ὀνομάζω (onomāzο) - al nombre, que a su vez es de ὄνομα - nombre) es una rama de la lingüística relacionada con la pregunta "¿cómo expresas X?" En realidad se entiende más comúnmente como una rama de la lexicología, el estudio de las palabras (aunque algunas aplican el término también a la gramática y la conversación). La onomasiología, como parte de la lexicología, parte de un concepto que se considera anterior (es decir, una idea, un objeto, una cualidad, una actividad, etc.) y pide sus nombres. El enfoque opuesto es conocido como semasiología: aquí uno comienza con una palabra y pregunta qué significa, o qué conceptos la palabra se refiere. Por lo tanto, una pregunta onomasiológica es, por ejemplo, "¿cuáles son los nombres de las piezas largas y estrechas de patata que han sido fritas?" (Respuestas: patatas fritas en los EE.UU., chips en el Reino Unido, etc), mientras que una pregunta semasiológica es, por ejemplo, "¿cuál es el significado del término chips?" (Respuestas: "trozos largos y estrechos de papa fritos" en el Reino Unido, "finas rodajas de patatas fritas o cocidas hasta que estén crujientes" en los Estados Unidos). La onomasiología puede llevarse a cabo sincrónicamente o diacrónicamente, es decir históricamente.

Onomasiology (from Greek: ὀνομάζω (onomāzο) — to name, which in turn is from ὄνομα — name) is a branch of linguistics concerned with the question "how do you express X?" It is in fact most commonly understood as a branch of lexicology, the study of words (although some apply the term also to grammar and conversation). Onomasiology, as a part of lexicology, starts from a concept which is taken to be prior (i.e. an idea, an object, a quality, an activity etc.) and asks for its names. The opposite approach is known as semasiology: here one starts with a word and asks what it means, or what concepts the word refers to. Thus, an onomasiological question is, e.g., "what are the names for long, narrow pieces of potato that have been deep-fried?" (answers: french fries in the US, chips in the UK, etc.), while a semasiological question is, e.g., "what is the meaning of the term chips?" (answers: 'long, narrow pieces of potato that have been deep-fried' in the UK, 'slim slices of potatoes deep fried or baked until crisp' in the US). Onomasiology can be carried out synchronically or diachronically, i.e. historically.
