En la Antigüedad Clásica, un oráculo era una persona o agencia que se consideraba que relacionaba consejos sabios o predicciones proféticas o precognición del futuro, inspirados por los dioses. Como tal, es una forma de adivinación. La palabra oráculo viene del verbo latino ōrāre "hablar" y se refiere adecuadamente al sacerdote o sacerdotisa que pronuncia la predicción. En el uso extendido, oráculo también puede referirse al sitio del oráculo, ya los enunciados oraculares mismos, llamados khrēsmoi en griego. Se pensaba que los oráculos eran portales a través de los cuales los dioses hablaban directamente a la gente. En este sentido, eran diferentes de los videntes que interpretaban los signos enviados por los dioses a través de signos de aves, entrañas de animales y otros métodos diversos. Los oráculos más importantes de la antigüedad griega eran Pythia, sacerdotisa a Apolo en Delphi, y el oráculo de Dione y Zeus en Dodona en Epirus. Otros templos de Apolo estaban situados en Didyma en la costa de Asia Menor, en Corinto y Bassae en el Peloponeso, y en las islas de Delos y Egina en el Mar Egeo.
