Percepción
La percepción es la organización, identificación e interpretación de la información sensorial para representar y comprender el ambiente. Toda percepción implica señales en el sistema nervioso, que a su vez resultan de la estimulación física o química de los órganos de los sentidos. Por ejemplo, la visión implica la luz que golpea la retina del ojo, el olor es mediado por las moléculas del olor, y el oído implica ondas de la presión. La percepción no es la recepción pasiva de estas señales, sino que está modelada por el aprendizaje, la memoria, la expectativa y la atención. La percepción involucra estos efectos de "arriba hacia abajo" así como el proceso "de abajo hacia arriba" de procesar la entrada sensorial. El procesamiento "bottom-up" transforma la información de bajo nivel en información de nivel superior. El procesamiento "de arriba hacia abajo" se refiere al concepto y las expectativas de una persona, y los mecanismos selectivos que influyen en la percepción. La percepción depende de funciones complejas del sistema nervioso, pero subjetivamente parece casi sin esfuerzo porque este procesamiento ocurre fuera de la conciencia. Desde el surgimiento de la psicología experimental en el siglo XIX, la comprensión de la psicología de la percepción ha progresado mediante la combinación de una variedad de técnicas.
