Physalia
Physalia es un género de la orden Siphonophora, colonias de cuatro pólipos y medusoides especializados que derivan en la superficie de los océanos Atlántico, Índico y Pacífico. Una vejiga llena de gas que se asemeja a una botella azul proporciona flotabilidad, y largos tentáculos de cnidocitos venenosos proporcionan un medio de captura de presas. Una vela en el flotador, que puede ser izquierda o diestra, impulsa Physalia sobre el mar, a menudo en grupos. Los individuos a veces se quedan varados en las playas, donde sus nematocistos tóxicos pueden permanecer fuertes durante semanas o meses en condiciones húmedas. La especie Physalia utriculus recibe el nombre común de Pacific man o 'war para distinguirlo de Physalia physalis, el hombre de guerra portugués más ampliamente distribuido y más grande. Las especies se distinguen por el tamaño del flotador y por tener un único frente a varios tentáculos de pesca larga. No se registran muertes por envenenamiento en P. utriculus, en contraste con las especies más grandes. El género fue descrito por primera vez por Jean-Baptiste Lamarck en 1801.
