Polen
El polen es un polvo fino a grueso que contiene los microgametófitos de las plantas de semilla, que producen los gametos masculinos. Los granos de polen tienen una capa dura de esporopollenina que protege a los gametófitos durante el proceso de su movimiento desde los estambres hasta el pistilo de las plantas con flores o desde el cono macho hasta el cono hembra de las plantas coníferas. Si el polen cae sobre un pistilo o cono femenino compatible, germina, produciendo un tubo polínico que transfiere el espermatozoide al óvulo que contiene el gametofito femenino. Los granos de polen individuales son lo suficientemente pequeños como para requerir una ampliación para ver detalles. El estudio del polen se llama palynology y es muy útil en paleoecología, paleontología, arqueología y forense. El polen en las plantas se utiliza para transferir el material genético masculino haploide de la antera de una sola flor al estigma de otro en la polinización cruzada. En un caso de autopolinización, este proceso tiene lugar desde la antera de una flor hasta el estigma de la misma flor.
