Polifonía
En la música, la polifonía es una textura consistente en dos o más líneas simultáneas de melodía independiente, en contraposición a la música con una sola voz o música con una voz melódica dominante acompañada de acordes. En el contexto de la tradición musical occidental, el término se utiliza generalmente para referirse a la música de finales de la Edad Media y el Renacimiento. Las formas barrocas como la fuga, que podría llamarse polifónicas, se describen generalmente como contrapuntales. Además, a diferencia de la terminología de la especie del contrapunto, la polifonía era generalmente "tono-contra-tono" / "punto contra punto" o "tono sostenido" en una parte con melismas de longitudes variables en otra. En todos los casos la concepción fue probablemente lo que Margaret Bent llama "contrapunto diádico", con cada parte siendo escrita generalmente contra una parte, con todas las partes modificadas si es necesario al final. Esta concepción de punto contra punto se opone a la "composición sucesiva", en la que las voces se escriben en un orden con cada nueva voz que encaja en el todo construido hasta ahora, lo que se suponía anteriormente.
