En filosofía, la potencialidad y la actualidad son principios de una dicotomía que Aristóteles usó para analizar el movimiento, la causalidad, la ética y la fisiología en su Física, Metafísica, Ética y De Anima. El concepto de potencialidad, en este contexto, se refiere generalmente a cualquier "posibilidad" que se pueda decir que una cosa tiene. Aristóteles no consideró todas las posibilidades iguales, y subrayó la importancia de aquellas que se hacen reales por sí mismas cuando las condiciones son correctas y nada las detiene. La realidad, en contraste con la potencialidad, es el movimiento, cambio o actividad que representa un ejercicio o cumplimiento de una posibilidad, cuando una posibilidad se vuelve real en el sentido más pleno. Estos conceptos, en formas modificadas, siguieron siendo muy importantes en la edad media, influyendo en el desarrollo de la teología medieval de varias maneras. Más allá de los tiempos modernos, mientras que la comprensión de la naturaleza implicada por la dicotomía perdió importancia, la terminología ha encontrado nuevos usos, desarrollándose indirectamente desde lo antiguo. Esto es más evidente en palabras como "energía" y "dinámica", pero también en ejemplos como el concepto biológico de una "entelequia".
