Presidio
Un presidio es una base fortificada establecida por los españoles en áreas bajo su control o expansión como la actual Italia, Grecia, Norte de África y América del Norte entre los siglos XVI y XIX. Las fortalezas fueron construidas para protegerse contra piratas, nativos americanos nativos y colonos enemigos. Más tarde en el oeste de América del Norte, con independencia, los mexicanos guarnieron los presidios españoles en la frontera norte y siguieron el mismo patrón en regiones fronterizas inestables como el Presidio de Sonoma, en Sonoma, California y el Presidio de Calabasas, en Arizona. En el oeste de Norteamérica, un rancho del rey o granja del rey se establecería a corta distancia fuera de un presidio. Esta era una parcela de tierra asignada al presidio para dar pastos a los caballos ya otras bestias de carga de la guarnición. México llamó a esta instalación "rancho nacional".
