Purdah
Purdah o pardah es una práctica religiosa y social de la reclusión femenina prevalente entre algunas comunidades musulmanas en Afganistán, Pakistán e India del Norte. Más sencillamente, es la práctica de impedir que los hombres vean a las mujeres. Esto tiene dos formas: la segregación física de los sexos y el requisito de que las mujeres cubran sus cuerpos para cubrir su piel y ocultar su forma. La segregación física dentro de un edificio se logra con el uso juicioso de paredes, cortinas y pantallas. El retiro de una mujer en purdah por lo general restringe sus actividades personales, sociales y económicas fuera de su hogar. La vestimenta usualmente usada es una burka, que puede o no incluir un yashmak, un velo para ocultar la cara. Los ojos pueden o no estar expuestos. Purdah fue rigurosamente observado bajo el Talibán en Afganistán, donde las mujeres tenían que observar purdah completo en todo momento cuando estaban en público. Sólo los miembros de la familia masculinos cercanos y otras mujeres se les permitió verlos fuera de purdah.
