La retórica es el arte del discurso, un arte que apunta a mejorar la capacidad de escritores o hablantes para informar, persuadir o motivar públicos particulares en situaciones específicas. Como tema de estudio formal y una práctica cívica productiva, la retórica ha desempeñado un papel central en la tradición occidental. Su definición más conocida viene de Aristóteles, que la considera una contraparte tanto de la lógica como de la política, y la llama "la facultad de observar en cualquier caso los medios disponibles de persuasión". Los retóricos suelen proporcionar heurísticas para comprender, descubrir y desarrollar argumentos para situaciones particulares, como las tres convocatorias convincentes de Aristóteles, los logos, el pathos y el ethos. Los cinco cánones de la retórica, que rastrean las tareas tradicionales en el diseño de un discurso persuasivo, fueron codificados primero en la Roma clásica: invención, disposición, estilo, memoria y entrega.
