Seleucus I Nicator fue uno de los Diadochi, que anteriormente había servido como general de infantería bajo Alejandro Magno, asumió el título de basileus y estableció el Imperio Seléucida sobre gran parte de los territorios orientales de Alejandro. Después de la muerte de Alejandro, Seleuco inicialmente apoyó a Perdiccas, el regente del imperio de Alejandro, y fue nombrado Comandante de los Compañeros y chiliarch en la Partición de Babilonia en 323 AC. Sin embargo, en el estallido de las guerras de Diadochi, los fracasos militares de Perdiccas contra Ptolomeo en Egipto condujeron al motín de sus tropas en Pelusium. Perdiccas fue traicionado y asesinado en una conspiración de Seleuco, Peithon y Antigenes en Pelusium en algún momento en 321 o 320 AC. En la Partición de Triparadisus, Seleuco fue nombrado sátrapa de Babilonia bajo el nuevo regente Antipater. Pero casi de inmediato, las guerras entre los Diadochi se reanudaron y Antígono obligó a Seleuco a huir de Babilonia. Seleuco sólo fue capaz de regresar a Babilonia en 312 aC con el apoyo de Ptolomeo. A partir de 312 AC, Seleucus amplió sin piedad sus dominios y conquistó eventual las tierras persas y medias.
