Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis era un médico húngaro de la extracción alemana ahora conocido como pionero temprano de los procedimientos antisépticos. Descrito como el "salvador de las madres", Semmelweis descubrió que la incidencia de la fiebre puerperal podría ser drásticamente reducida por el uso de la desinfección de las manos en las clínicas obstétricas. La fiebre puerperal era común en los hospitales de mediados del siglo XIX y con frecuencia fatal, con mortalidad entre el 10% y el 35%. Semmelweis propuso la práctica del lavado con soluciones de cal clorada en 1847 mientras trabajaba en la Primera Clínica de Obstetricia del Hospital General de Viena, donde las salas de médicos tenían tres veces la mortalidad de las salas de parteras. Publicó un libro de sus hallazgos en Etiología, Concepto y Profilaxis de Childbed Fever. A pesar de varias publicaciones de resultados donde el lavado de manos redujo la mortalidad por debajo del 1%, las observaciones de Semmelweis entraron en conflicto con las opiniones científicas y médicas establecidas de la época y sus ideas fueron rechazadas por la comunidad médica. Algunos médicos estaban ofendidos por la sugerencia de que debían lavarse las manos y Semmelweis no podía ofrecer ninguna explicación científica aceptable para sus hallazgos.
