Una siesta es una siesta corta tomada en la tarde temprano, a menudo después de la comida del mediodía. Dicho período de sueño es una tradición común en algunos países, especialmente aquellos donde el clima es cálido. Debido a que la siesta es el sueño tradicional del día de España ya través de la influencia española, muchos países latinoamericanos y Filipinas, la palabra siesta de la lengua española deriva originalmente de la palabra latina hora sexta "sexta hora". La siesta es también común en Italia, donde los museos, las iglesias y las tiendas cierran durante siesta de modo que los dueños puedan ir a casa para un almuerzo largo y quizás un snooze durante las horas más calientes del día. La Vida de Carlomagno de Einhard relata la siesta de verano del emperador: "En verano, después de su comida del mediodía, comía algo de fruta y tomaba otra bebida, luego se quitaba los zapatos y se desnudaba completamente, como lo hacía por la noche, y descansaba por dos O tres horas. Los principales factores que explican la distribución geográfica de la moderna siesta son las altas temperaturas y la ingestión de alimentos a mediodía. Combinado, estos dos factores contribuyen a la sensación de somnolencia después del almuerzo.
