Tamale
Un tamal es un plato mesoamericano tradicional hecho de masa, que es al vapor o hervido en una envoltura de hojas. El envoltorio se desecha antes de comer. Los tamales se pueden llenar con carnes, quesos, frutas, verduras, chiles o cualquier preparación según el gusto, y tanto el líquido de relleno como el de cocción pueden ser sazonados. Los tamales se remontan a los antiguos mayas, que los prepararon para las fiestas ya en el período preclásico. La gente maya llamó a sus tortillas de maíz y tamales tanto utah. Tamales se originó en Mesoamérica desde 8000 a 5000 aC. Las civilizaciones azteca y maya, así como los Olmeca y Tolteca antes que ellos, usaban tamales como alimento portátil, a menudo para apoyar a sus ejércitos, pero también para cazadores y viajeros. El uso de los tamales en el Imperio Inca había sido reportado mucho antes de que los españoles visitaran el Nuevo Mundo. La diversidad de lenguas nativas en Mesoamérica llevó a una serie de palabras locales para el tamal, muchas de las cuales permanecen en uso. El singular español de tamales es tamal. La palabra inglesa "tamale" es una formación estadounidense de tamales.
