Tokamak
Un tokamak es un dispositivo que utiliza un campo magnético para confinar un plasma en forma de toro. El logro de un equilibrio de plasma estable requiere líneas de campo magnético que se mueven alrededor del toro en una forma helicoidal. Un campo helicoidal de este tipo puede generarse mediante la adición de un campo toroidal y un campo poloidal. En un tokamak, el campo toroidal es producido por los electroimanes que rodean al toro, y el campo poloidal es el resultado de una corriente eléctrica toroidal que fluye dentro del plasma. Esta corriente se induce dentro del plasma con un segundo conjunto de electroimanes. El tokamak es uno de varios tipos de dispositivos de confinamiento magnético, y es uno de los candidatos más investigados para producir energía de fusión termonuclear controlada. Los campos magnéticos se utilizan para el confinamiento ya que ningún material sólido podría soportar la temperatura extremadamente alta del plasma. Una alternativa al tokamak es el stellarator. Los Tokamaks fueron inventados en la década de 1950 por los físicos soviéticos Igor Tamm y Andrei Sakharov, inspirados en una idea original de Oleg Lavrentiev.
