Transcodificación
Transcodificación es la conversión directa analógica a digital o digital a digital de una codificación a otra, como para archivos de datos de película, archivos de audio o codificación de caracteres. Esto se suele hacer en los casos en que un dispositivo de destino no admite el formato o tiene una capacidad de almacenamiento limitada que ordena un tamaño de archivo reducido o para convertir datos incompatibles u obsoletos en un formato mejor respaldado o moderno. En el mundo del video analógico, la transcodificación se puede realizar justo mientras se están buscando archivos, así como para la presentación. Por ejemplo, los archivos Cineon y DPX se han utilizado ampliamente como un formato común para el cine digital, pero el tamaño de los datos de una película de dos horas es de aproximadamente 8 terabytes. Ese tamaño grande puede aumentar el costo y la dificultad de manejar archivos de película. Sin embargo, la transcodificación en un formato JPEG2000 sin pérdidas tiene un mejor rendimiento de compresión que otras tecnologías de codificación sin pérdidas, y en muchos casos, JPEG2000 puede comprimir imágenes a medio tamaño. La transcodificación es comúnmente un proceso con pérdidas, que introduce pérdidas de generación; Sin embargo, la transcodificación puede ser sin pérdidas si la entrada se comprime sin pérdidas y la salida se comprime sin pérdida o sin compresión.
