Transferrina
Las transferrinas son glicoproteínas de plasma sanguíneo de unión a hierro que controlan el nivel de hierro libre en los fluidos biológicos. La transferrina humana está codificada por el gen TF. Las glicoproteínas de la transferrina unen muy fuertemente el hierro, pero reversiblemente. Aunque el hierro ligado a la transferrina es menos del 0,1% del hierro total del cuerpo, es el grupo de hierro más importante, con la tasa de rotación más alta. La transferrina tiene un peso molecular de alrededor de 80 KDa y contiene dos sitios específicos de unión de Fe de alta afinidad. La afinidad de la transferrina por Fe es extremadamente alta pero disminuye progresivamente con la disminución del pH por debajo de la neutralidad. Cuando no está ligado al hierro, se le conoce como "apotransferrina".
