Ureasa
Las ureasas, funcionalmente, pertenecen a la superfamilia de amidohidrolasas y fosfotriestreasas. Es una enzima que cataliza la hidrólisis de la urea en dióxido de carbono y amoníaco. La reacción se produce de la siguiente manera: 2CO + H2O → CO2 + 2NH3 Más específicamente, la ureasa cataliza la hidrólisis de urea para producir amoníaco y carbamato; El carbamato producido se degrada posteriormente por hidrólisis espontánea para producir otro amoníaco y ácido carbónico. La actividad de la ureasa tiende a aumentar el pH de su ambiente, ya que produce amoníaco, una molécula básica. Las ureas se encuentran en numerosas bacterias, hongos, algas, plantas y algunos invertebrados, así como en los suelos, como una enzima del suelo. Son metaloenzimas que contienen níquel de alto peso molecular. En 1926, James B. Sumner, profesor asistente en la Universidad de Cornell, demostró que la ureasa es una proteína examinando su forma cristalizada. El trabajo de Sumner fue la primera demostración de que una proteína pura puede funcionar como una enzima, y finalmente llevó al reconocimiento de que la mayoría de las enzimas son de hecho proteínas y el premio Nobel de química a Sumner en 1946. La estructura de la ureasa fue la primera Resuelto por PA Karplus en 1995.
